The economy
Sir,—lt is time that the Government gave tax relief where it is most effective in curing the economic ills of the country. The bold step required is to make company dividends exempt in the hands of individuals to the extent of $15,000 and thus eliminate the present iniquitous double taxation. Most businesses fail because of undercapitalisation and bad management. The tax exemption would make equity investment more attractive, rectifying under-capital-isation especially for the small businessman and allow further expansion in this section of the economy. This in turn would give a ' substantial increase in employment opportunities. If all small businessmen employing 10 or more people were to employ one more, then we would be again in a situation as in the 19605. Wage and price freezes will not cure the economic ills of our economy. What will, however, is producing more wealth and this will happen only with incentives for small businessmen and investors to put money into business share capital.—Yours, etc., A. J. EASON.
