‘Smiley’s People’

“The Women in White,” which will end tonight, will be replaced by another 8.8. C. classic — the spy serial, “Smiley’s People.” The British master spy, George Smiley (Alec Guinness), will return for a final encounter with his deadly Soviet counterpart, Karla, in this adaptation of John le Carre’s sequel to “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” Dramatic film “The Shooting Party,” a Soviet film screening on Two at 10.20 tonight, opened the Cannes Film Festival in 1978. The screenplay is based on one of Chekov’s stories and is set at the start of this century among the Russian nobility. Writing in “Film” magazine about the movie, Robert Kitley said: “It is shot in extraordinarily beautiful settings — one dramatic and poetic island scene is among the most memorable of any film at Cannes.” Special effects “Gulliver in Lilliput,” the 8.8. C. programme today on Two tonight, was praised by London’s “Evening Standard,” which said: “Do watch this. The adaptation is tight and amusing, and the special effects are really something.” Religious show A new religious programme, “With One Voice” (Sundays, 5.30 p.m. on Two), will replace “Stars on Sunday” for the next 10 weeks. It is a mixture of hymn and gospel music, interspersed with children’s stories based on the Bible, and film items dealing with religious involvement in New Zealand. Horror movie One of the classic horror movies of the 19505, “The Creature From the Black Lagoon,” will be screened tomorrow night at 10.15 on Two. Originally released in 3-D, the film was directed by Jack Arnold, who specialised in science fiction and horror movies.
