Auckland gangs clash
PA Auckland The police yesterday appealed for calm among Auckland gangs after a clash in the city put two men in hospital and left one shop with a $lO,OOO repair ’bill.
Several shots were fired inside a Karangahape Road restaurant just after midnight Vehicles parked nearby were rammed. One of the men, taken to Auckland Hospital, was said last evening to be in a serious, but stable condition.
The man, Mr Rangi Samuels, of Glen Innes, has a broken leg and ribs and a punctured lung. His brother, Keith Samuels, is progressing well after suffering a stab wound. • The Auckland polfe ar-
rested two men. One has been charged with unlawful possession of ammunition and the other with disorderly behaviour. The Auckland police community relations co-ordina-tor, Chief Inspector L. R. Woodgate, said yesterday the confrontation had been
spontaneous. “The police have been talking with gang members and people associated with gangs to ensure that the peace is preserved in the city,” he said. “What we don’t want is retaliation.” If more trouble broke out, police action would be firm.
