Lay-offs feared at Chch firm
Clerical workers at Andrews and Beaven fear widespread redundancies as the Repco Corporation of Australia seeks a greater interest in the company. Andrews and Beaven is believed to be the biggest employer of clerical workers in Christchurch, after the Government. It employs 189 clerical staff at its Hillmorton headquarters and its branch offices.
The secretary of the Canterbury branch of the Clerical Workers’ Union, Mrs Doreen Shannon, said after a meeting with members yesterday that they were “extremely concerned” about the future.
"They have been told very little, and there are a number of contradictions in what they have been told,” said Mrs Shannon. Employers were convinced that there would be mass redundancies soon, she said. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the head office would be moved to Auckland, if the Repco offer was successful. Mrs Shannon said the union would meet representatives of the Andrews and Beaven management on Wednesday, June 8, in an attempt to settle a number of questions. The company’s shareholders will meet the next day to discuss the Repco offer.
