Computer tax cut?
PA Auckland The Minister of Trade and Industry, Mr, Templeton, promised yesterday that he would press for a reduction in the 40 per cent sales tax on computers. Opening the new $1.5 million Auckland offices of the American electronics company, Hewlett-Packard, in Epsom, he said that the Cabinet would consider the , matter early in July when it reviewed the recent report oL the Industries nfant Commission on thg
electronics industry. The commission recommended reducing the sales, tax to 10 per cent Earlier, Hewlett-Pack-ard’s New Zealand managing director, Mr Wayne Squires, described the 40 per cent sales tax as “a serious, disincentive" to this country’s computer industry. He said it had caused some companies, including a rubber manufacturer, to buy inappropriate computers “to stay within their budget.”
