Lively game likely by hockey rivals
A lively match is on the cards at Hagley Park today when Carlton clashes with Selwyn, regarded as its traditional rival, in the Asia Pacific .. senior women’s hockey competition. The tussle for positions at the top of the table has intensified.
For five weeks, Selwyn shared, the top spot with Carlton before dropping two games, the first to Woolston I and then, surprisingly, to Harewood. Selwyn now shares .third with Burnside. Selwyn, Burnside, and Woolston I, all have six wins from eight games, but by virtue of a drawn match, Woolston I has crept into second. Carlton's forwards will be hoping to improve on their showing last week against Burnside. In that match, admittedly in atrociowpconditions, there seemed to be
a lack of finishing up front, but with better luck today some crisp, attractive play is likely. Shirley Haig and Robyn Blackman have been in good form in recent weeks and Penny Moore, the left wing, is a young player of considerable ability. Selwyn, which usually does the basics well, can expect solid games from the captain, Barbara Mitchell, who is always busy in midfield, and Nicky Sherriff, a strong, attacking forward. Selwyn also has some talented "young players in the form of Gill Kane, a back, and Tania Johnston, the goal keeper. Both are in the Canterbury under-21 squad which will play teams from Northland, Waikato, Wairarapa and Otago in the national finals in Christchurch at Queen’s Birthday week-end.
