South-east Asian games start
NZPA Singapore Some 2000 athletes will march into Singapore’s National Stadium at the week-end to watch a lone runner light the flame and signal the opening of the region’s biggest sports festival, the South-east Asian (Sea) Games. There will be no elephants trumpeting the start of the IQ-day extravaganza as in the Asian games in New Delhi, but the ceremony should provide a colourful spectacle for the hoped-for 60,000 capacity crowd. The games bring together sportsmen from eight countries every two years, and start with a soccer clash between Singapore and Malaysia. The athletes will be chasing more than 230 gold medals in 18 sports ranging from traditional track and field events to water-skiing and bowling.
