DUTIES: The manager will be primarily responsible for all aspects of the Centre's operation. The appointee will be responsible to a Board of Directors, and is expected to work in close consultation with the Vanuatu Department of Fisheries. He/she will be required to establish the operations of the Centre on a sound footing, within a twoyear period and to conduct staff training. Specific duties involve coordination of all activities including implementing procedures for fish purchasing and quality control; preparation for sale; marketing and distribution; administration, supervision and training; liaison with commercial and industrial sectors and relevant Government departments and the establishment of an effective pricing system. One of the principal duties will also be the training of a local counterpart iri the substantive skills required to manage the Fisheries Centre after a two-year period. QUALIFICATIONS: The appointee will need to be thoroughly versed in the fish processing and marketing industry, with a proven record in management,, sales, administration and marketing procedures. DUTIES: (A) GENERAL— To raise the productivity, profitability and standards of three sawmills operated by the forestry division and develop awareness in Tonga of the possibility of utilising locally-grown timber. (B) SPECIFIC—(I) Improve throughput and quality of production from coconut sawmills and ancillary operations, in both the Government and private sector, to establish these on a commercial basis. (II) Investigate new uses and techniques for processing locallygrown timbers, particularly coconut wood, and develop Interest in the public and private sectors for its use in construction. (III) Train local staff in the skills required to carry out these duties. (iv) Co-ordinate with the Statistics Department the collection and presentation of relevant data on wood utilisation in Tonga. The appointee will be expected to produce quarterly reports on his activities. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have several years experience in forestry and have been Involved with milling and timber utilisation.
