Sleep problems
Sir,—Having tried many methods of getting children to sleep, including the “family bed” principle, I must conclude that no one way suits every child. While sleeping with us helped our son during a difficult phase, our presence made no difference whatever to our daughter, who slept with us from birth. In fact the inclusion of this restless, wakeful child often led to my husband seeking refuge in another room, adding resentment to my despair at having a child who followed the same disturbed sleeping pattern whether with us or alone. Thankfully, the psychology department finally provided the answer to our problem, proving that there are “different strokes for different folks” in this, as well as many other areas of parenting. — Yours, etc., JANE E. CLARK. May 25, 1983.
