Sexy scene censored

A sexy scene in David Bowie’s latest video — filmed on an Australian beach — was cut by the 8.8. C. at the week-end because it was too erotic for “Top of the Pops.” The video, which is directed by Bowie and is reported to have cost him $236,000 to make, shows him frolicking nude on the beach with a beautiful naked Oriental woman to promote his latest single, “China Girl.” The full uncensored version of the clip was scheduled to be played, however, on “The Old Grey Whistle Test,” another rock

show that screens after midnight. The clip has not yet arrived in New Zealand. Promotional videos like this one are imported by record companies, in this case, and offered to Television New Zealand to show on “Ready to Roll” and “Radio with Pictures.” g Mr Lochie Rutherford, E.M.I. Records division manager, said from Wellington, that he had seen the full video at a private showing in Los Angeles a few weeks ago. “There are two versions, one edited, the other unedited, both of which we

will receive. At that stage it will be up to the discretion of ourselves and the TV people which is presented. The final decision is Avalon’s. We accept their judgement. “It is a pretty good video. I didn’t think any of it was inappropriate. It does have shots in it which, okay, they look a little steamy. But the video is one of the best I have seen.” Mr Rutherford expects the video will reach New Zealand next week. “China Girl,” which is from the Bowie album, “Let’s Dance,” will be released as a single in about three weeks.
