Massacre of Matabeles

Sir,—David Dumergue’s description (May 3) of Zimbabwe as Marxist is quite misleading. Marx outlined the conditions in society which he felt would make communism inevitable. Where conditions of exploitation exist or have existed, communism has in many cases gained control of nationalist revolutionary movements and subsequently been able to establish a

communist government. The manner in which the British Government ended colonial domination and the neo-colonialism of the Smith regime in Zimbabwe has not followed the pattern of Vietnam, where the communists moved into a vacuum left by the administration which abandoned the country. Nor has Zimbabwe followed the pattern of Cuba which was forced by American sanctions to go to

Russia despite the fact that the local communist party refused to support Castro. In these cases foreign-sponsored “anti-commun-ist” governments had little popular support. Tribal difficulties notwithstanding, the present Government of Zimbabwe enjoys a large measure of popular support. — Yours, etc.,

J. M. TIMINGS. May 5, 1983.
