Expatriate Kiwis in national squad

At least three of New Zealand’s expatriate rugby league representatives will have little rest from football duties after returning to this country from Britain. Danny Campbell, who had one match for the Kiwis ip 1980 and continues to impress with Wigan, and the present internationals and Hull Kingston Rovers teammates, Gary Prohm and Gordon Smith, have been chosen to attend the natitpal coaching school at HanSton. Only. 32 players were mtectad for the five-day
and Mark Gillespie (Auckland), who toured Australia and Papua New Guinea with the Kiwis last season. Hudson might be considered particularly unfortunate after compiling a perfect kicking record and performing strongly in the centres against Auckland at Christchurch on Saturday. The national panel disagreed with the Auckland selector-coach, Bob Bailey, when choosing the scrumhalves. Darryl Morrison, who had a very lively game for Auckland on Saturday, has missed out to the Kiwis, Shane Varley, Clayton Friend (both Auckland), as
scored a dazzling try for South on Saturday, continues a rapid rise in his status. Little more than a month ago his experience had been limited to club and provincial second Xm level; now he must at least be regarded as a firm candidate for the New Zealand Maoris tour to Britain. Another newcomer to such illustrious company is the South second-rower, Doug Thompson, who is also in his initial first-class season. The squad is: From Auckland: Nick Wright, Ron O’Regan, Dean Bell, Cedric Lovett, Shane
training camp, which begins next Sunday, and there is provision to add two others. The vacancies could be filled by Kiwis who have completed their British club commitments or New Zea-land-based contenders. The selectors (Messrs Graham Lowe, Bill O’Callaghan, Gary Clarke, Ossie Butt and Bill Sorensen) have included 13 Auckland players, six from South Island and five from both Central and Northern Districts, in addition to Campbp, Smith and Prohm. Among those overlooked were Kevin Fisher (Northern), Lewis Hudson (South),
well as Smith. Fisher and Hudson were not the only outside backs who had their claims rejected. Another former Kiwi, Bernie Green, his South wing partner, Robin Alfeld, and the Auckland three-quarters, Joe Ropati and Mark Bournville, must have been given earnest consideration. The wing positions have instead gone to Dean Bell (Auckland), Robbie Muller (Northern) — who both spent the last northern winter with British #ides — Shane Horo (Northern) and Lou Kupa (Central). Richard Hampton, who
