Newcomers surprise
The success of the two teams promoted from the second division, Saints Excheo uer (Wellington) and Central Hotel-Napier, was the main feature of the opening round in the Countrywide national basketball league during the week-end. Napier surprised on Saturday with a splendid 86-73 win over the 1982 national league winner, Auckland Metro, in Auckland. However, yesterday the Napier side was beaten by another Auckland side, Drake Personnel, 68-81. Nelson won its Saturday game against 2ZM Centrals
(Wellington) 76-69, in Well.ington, keeping its hopes of a high placing alive. Points, with games played in parentheses, are: Saints 4 (2), Drake Personnel 2 (1), Nelson 2 (2), Napier 2 (2), Canterbury 0 (1), Centrals 0 (1), Auckland Metro 0 (1), Porirua 0 (0). Results from the men’s second division were: Hamilton 85, Auckland B 48; Palmerston North 80, Wanganui 75; North Shore 104, Whangarei 74.
