Labour Party retirements
Sir,—Mr Connelly’s announced retirement is the second of Labour’s experienced members and a blow to their new leadership team. Mr Rowling has said he was not part of the new leadership and Mr Connelly who was dropped to 32nd rating recently may well feel the same. Labour’s unrealistic nuclear ship policy could be another factor in Mr Connelly’s wish to retire. The Yaldhurst electorate may well provide a haven for Mr Kerry Burke whose political life on the West Coast has not appeared a happy one. Or it could provide a safe seat for Mr Jim Anderton if one is not available in Auckland. — Yours, etc., J. F. garvey; Westport. May 3, 1983.
