Unions to meet for peace
Wellington reporter
A conference of trade union organisations in Pacific countries will be organised by the Federation of Labour to promote peace and disarmament. The federation’s annual conference resolved yesterday to call the conference, which would discuss the formation of a nuclear-free zone in the Pacific.
Delegates passed remits reaffirming the federation’s support for a nuclear-free zone and opposition to nuclear-weapons testing. The federation will support European peace movements struggling to prevent the deployment of nuclear weapons in their countries. Under another resolution passed yesterday, a delegation will be sent to the Philippines Embassy to protest about the abuse of trade union rights in the Philippines. A delegation will also ask the Minister of Defence, Mr
Thomson, to end New Zealand military assistance to the Philippines. A remit seeking a onemonth trade ban on Chile in October was amended to change the ban to a month of unspecified action.
More than 20 remits were passed with little discussion yesterday because of time restrictions imposed after the long wage-policy debate. The following were among remits passed:
© The federation will support action taken by unions to prevent exploitation of Antarctic resources.
® It will co-operate with the Labour Party to defeat the National Government. O It will advise members against joining private health schemes because of the downgrading of the State health system.
• The federation will press for more Government funds to be allocated to local bodies for job creation.
The conference will end today.
