Blind student capped
PA Auckland A blind university graduate, Mr Allan Webster, nearly gave up studying for bis degree when the problems he faced had seemed too great.
Such thoughts were not in his mind yesterday, however, when he was capped Bachelor of Commerce at the Auckland Town Hall.
“I have had my moments
and I nearly gave it away, but I am glad I stuck it out,” he said after the ceremony.
Mr Webster, who has only some side vision, is immobile without a white cane.
His wife, Rose, attended all his lectures with him to take notes. He also used a tape recorder. With the help of his side vision, he was
able to use a closed-circuit television system during examinations.
Mr Webster is studying for a master of commerce degree in management studies which be hopes to complete within a year. He is considering going to England where, he says, employment opportunities for blind people are better than in New Zealand.
