Fun run proceeds to Red Cross

The Red Cross, which attends most long-distance running races and fun runs, will be on hand again on Sunday with a mobile firstaid team to support the annual “Press” park-to-park fun run.

this year the Red Cross will also be on the “receiving end,” because proceeds from the entry fee of $1 a runner will go to the organisation, which depends on public donations to maintain its services.

The secretary-manager of the North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society, Mr J. R. Mahoney, said that it cost about $250,000 for its services in Canterbury last year.

The fun run will start at Sydenham Park at 9.30 a.m., but officials of the Rotary Club of Christchurch South will be on hand from 8.30 a.m. to take entry fees from runners who have not already bought their run cards from the offices of “The Press.” There are three distances to suit the fitness of the 3000 to 4000 runners expected to take part. The shortest is only Ikm, from the park to Boon’s Bakery in Devon Street and back, via Colombo Street. Those with a little more stamina will be able to continue south along Colombo Street, right into Ashgrove Terrace, then cross the Heathcote River by Princess Margaret Hospital and back to Sydenham Park via Cashmere Road, Centaurus Road, the Bowenvale bridge (just past the ice-skating rink), Eastern Terrace, and Waimea Terrace to Colombo Street.

For the very fit there is a 10.4 km course which includes a hill section from Princess Margaret Hospital, up Hackthorne Road, along

MacMillan Avenue, and down Dyers Pass Road to connect with Centaurus Road and the same route as the shorter course along the flat beside the Heathcote River.

Certificates will be given to all finishers.

Mr Mahoney said that the money raised by the run would be used to buy books for the Red Cross library, which is used by the sick.

the aged, and the infirm. Volunteers take the books to the 650 or more regular users at their homes or in institutions. The library has about 13,000 books, but the Red Cross tries to keep up to date with new titles.

If any money is left it will be used for the emergency relief team, which uses four utility vehicles and a caravan.
