Speed limits
Sir,—lt seems obvious that the problems of the railways, the controversy over the modification to State Highway 73 and road deaths by excessive speed can be solved in one step. That is we do as Dr Bailey suggests and reduce the speed limit for both night and day. The juggernauts that patrol our roads would have to slow down, becoming less feasible as a method of transport and doing less damage to the roads. Those people who wish to sight-see from the roads will be able to do so enjoying the exquisite scenery of New Zealand on delightful, twisting roads without worrying about pushy salesmen. The reduced speed limit should save lives on the road, as the reduction of . the speed limit in the early 70s did, and the railways will have nothing to fear from deregulation as they will become the most effective form of longdistance transport.—Yours, etc.,
A. W. ROSS. April 20,. 1983.
