About 1500 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan’s western province of Herat bordering Iran in a big offensive by Government and Soviet troops against rebels, a Pakistan-based Afghan resistance group says.
The resistance group Jamiat Islami Afghanistan said that the . offensive which had begun, on April 16, in the western part of Herat, had more than 5000 Soviet troops and Afghan armoured and commando units backed by air force taking part. i No independent confirmation of the report was available.
