Car distribution delayed
The first post-devaluation cars to reach Christchurch arrived at Lyttelton yesterday morning in the Japanese car-carrier Toyofuji No. 8, but they are unlikely to reach dealers’ showrooms until about July, when retail prices could be as much as $3OOO more than they are today. The slab-sided ship, which can carry more than 700 completely built-up cars as well as hundreds of cases of c.k.d. (completely knockeddown) cars, discharged 65 cars in an hour and 40 minutes yesterday morning. These packs will be assembled into cars at the Buchanans Road plant of
Toyota New Zealand (Christchurch), Ltd. It was expected that the ship would sail for Auckland yesterday but as labour was at a premium there, the ship remained at Lyttelton overnight and her crew of about 20 were able to have a few hours ashore today. The Toyofuji No. 8 is one of a fleet of Japanese carcarriers run by a consortium in which the Toyota manufacturing firm is a substantial partner. The vessel’s home port is Nagoya, but she usually spends only 24 hours there between voyages. Her ports
of call are Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, and Lyttelton.
