First FM station on air
PA Auckland New Zealand’s first FM radio station, Radio MJK in Auckland, was officially opened yesterday by a broadcast message recorded by the Prime Minister, Mr Muldoon, who described it as an historic moment. The member of Parliament for Pak'uranga, Mr T. de V. Hunt, chairman of the Government caucus broadcasting committee, spoke at a champagne breakfast held to celebrate the 8 a.m. launch. He said that the introduc-
tion of FM marked a new dimension in broadcasting and that New Zealand was fortunate to have a mix of public and private radio. The company from which the station grew, Metropolitan FM Broadcasting, Ltd, has been preparing to go on air since last August, when it was granted one of two FM licences for the Auckland area by the Broadcasting Tribunal. Radio MJK can be heard clearly from Wellsford to Huntly and east to the Thames Valley.
