Outsider’s St Leger

NZPA Sydney Forward Charge (100-to-l) lived up to his name and his New Zealand breeding to run away with the A. J. C. St Leger on a heavy track at Randwick on Monday. The Tommy Smithtrained Rangong three-year-old was too good for his rivals in the conditions and finished a length and a half in front of the Sydney Cup winner and hot favourite, Veloso.

Smith said after the race that his charge’s win was no surprise to him. He said he had rated Forward Charge’s chances better than those of the third favourite, Chiamare, another of his charges. Smith bought Forward Charge (Rangong—Always Rushing) as a yearling at the Trentham Sales for $BOOO.
