Shipping news Ship to be taken off Eastern run

Four shipping lines which sail to the Middle East have told shippers that one vessel will probably be withdrawn from the service. A circular on behalf of the Blue Star Line, Nippon Yusen Kaisha Line, Scaucarriers, and Overseas Containers, Ltd, says depressed trade conditions on the run is making it hard to keep costs down. To put up freight rates continually would have an adverse effect on trade. According to the circular, the shipping lines believe the only way to combat continual price rises is to “rationalise the services and/or readjust tonnages.” “The lines believe it is their responsibility to stabilise freight rates,” the circular said. Discussions were now being held to establish the best way

to reduce surplus tonnage on the run. It was planned to withdraw one ship from the service. When trade improved vessels would be put back on the run, the circular said. The lines think reducing tonnage is in the best interests of the trade. They say it will help keep freight rates down and maintain orderly competition among carriers.
