‘Timely’ release of Waitangi book
A book aimed at clarifying the events which took place at the Treaty of Waitangi celebrations this year has been released by the Church and Society Commission of the National Council of Churches.
Titled “It Happened at Waitangi 1983,” the book discusses an incident in which .99 people were arrested while protestintnear the Treaty House on February 6.
The commission’s chairman, Mrs J. A. Armstrong, said that the book detailed some of the “basic issues in the Waitangi debate,” reasons for the Churches’ involvement, the arrests, and the contents of subsequent correspondence between the council and the Minister of Lands, Mr Elworthy. She said that the book was timely because it coincided with the Royal visit.
