Hefty prison terms for 83

NZPA-Reuter Florence A Florence court has sentenced 83 members of the Leftist Prima Linea (Front Line) guerrilla group to heavy prison terms at the end of a six-month trial. The case involved what was once Italy’s most powerful Leftist guerrilla group after the Red Brigades, and arose from its activities in Tuscany between 1976 and 1980. Nine people were aquitted.

Several of the sentences were for Prima Linea’s abortive assault on Florence’s Murate prison in 1978, in which a policeman was killed and one was seriously injured as the guerrillas attempted to free imprisoned colleagues. Franco Coda, the leader of the attack who has not been captured, was given the only live sentence at the trial. Others were sentenced to up to 30 years in prison.
