Man burnt by fuel fire

A young man’s back was burned while his kart was being refuelled at the Daytona Park Amusement Centre in Moorhouse Avenue early yesterday afternoon. Steven Callanan, aged 21, was taken to Burwood Hospital where he was treated and later discharged. The accident occurred

about 1.30 p.m. when Mr Callanan’s kart was being fuelled. As the fuel line was pulled out of the kart some petrol spilled over his shirt and part of the machine and in seconds fire broke out. Friends managed to smother the fire on Mr Callanan and to pull his Tshirt off. A fire extinguisher was used to put out the fire

on the kart. Mr Callanan was given first aid before an ambulance took him to Christchurch Hospital from where he was later transferred to Burwood Hospital. The manager of Daytona Park, Mr D. Chambers, had no comment to make about the incident when approached later in the day.
