Legal link-up

Computer links to a United States data bank of legal information were made by a legal seminar in Greymouth at the week-end.

The seminar which attracted about 100 lawyers from all parts of the South Island was held in the conference room of Kings Hotel.

One of the organisers, Mr K. N. Hampton, of Christchurch, said that they had excellent co-operation from the Post Office in making the link with the Oasis system in California and also with another link to the Victoria University of Wellington’s computer. Conference discussions included future methods of conveyancing, and a panel comprising representatives

of the legal profession, the police and the Customs Department discussed the indecency laws as applied to book importation. One of the panellists was a former Greymouth police sergeant, now an inspector with the police legal section in Wellington, Mr David Bates. A formal Bar dinner was held on Saturday evening at which the guest speakers were Mr Justice Hardie Boys and Mr Michael Haggitt, a Dunedin barrister. On Sunday evening, a social evening was held at Shantytown. The visitors returned home yesterday — the Canterbury contingent by their specially chartered train.
