Whiting, Miss Ross streets ahead

The gulf which separates Peter Whiting and Alison Ross from the remainder of Canterbury’s leading badminton players was amply illustrated when they won the singles and doubles titles at the Anzac week-end tournament at the Skellerup Hall. Whiting was untroubled to win the men’s singles title, beating Prasanna Gulasekharam in the final. Prasanna performed admirably in reaching the final, having beaten Mike Lindsay of Southland in the semi-finals.

In the men’s doubles, Prasanna again qualified for the final, with Craig Crossweller, beating Lindsay and his southern partner, Terry Smith, in three games. However, the final proved to be a comfortable win for Whiting and Brian Williams.

Miss Ross conceded just 13 points in winning the women’s singles title. Indeed, her semifinal and final opponents, Rosey Stanton and Jane Clarke, are both players with Wisden Cup provincial experience, yet could muster just 10 points collectively.

However, they gained some small measure of compensation by winning the doubles title, beating Miss Ross and Jenny Hood, after dropping the first game. The mixed doubles title predictably went to Whiting and Miss Ross, who were far too strong for Graham Sercombe and Miss Clarke. Results.—
