Hut demolished
Pioneer Hut in the Southern Alps has been demolished after the Lands and Survey Department and the National Parks Board decided it was unsafe. A year ago, the hut was found to be in a dangerous position after the foundation rock on which it was built collapsed as the Albert and Glees glaciers each side of the ridge receded. After the removal of its iron, the hut was burnt. “We’ve left the toilet
there and will put the radio in it,” said Mr Allan Cragg, the" Westland National Park Board’s chief ranger. Some avalanche probes and snow shovels would also be left at the toilet for emergencies.
Design work for a replacement hut slightly lower and south of the old hut was nearly finished, Mr Cragg said. The new hut, big enough for 16 people, should be ready next summer. ... ...
