Sparks wins squash final
Lyn Sparks came from two sets down to beat Robbie Burnett in the final of the Lion Breweries Ashburton squash tournament at the week-end.
Sparks (Marist), the Canterbury convenor of selectors, beat Burnett (Linwood), 7-9, 39, 9-4, 9-4, 10-9 in the goodhumoured 60-minute final.
Burnett, ranked No. 2 in Canterbury and three places above Sparks, made several unforced errors in the final set which allowed a very tired Sparks to take the match. . Both finalists had surprisingly easy matches in the semi-finals, Sparks defeating Rex McDonald (Celtic) and Burnett overcoming Craig Hibbert (Linwood). The withdrawal through injury of the second seed, Suzanne Davies, after the quarterfinals took some interest from the women’s finals: The withdrawal of Davies (Linwood), allowed Mary Hunt (St Andrew’s) an easy path into the final where she found the tightness of Czesia Bowen’s (Titnaru) play too' good and lost 7-9, 1-9, 3-9. Geoff Plunkett (Otago) and Sean O’Brien (Burnside) won the men’s B and C grades and Chris Cantwell (Marist) took out the women’s B grade final.
