Surprise team gives Netherlands a fright

By

KEVIN TUTTY

Kuala Lumpur Canada, the surprise team at the women’s world cup hockey tournament, gave the favourite, the Netherlands, a fright in the final at the week-end before it lost, 4-2. The Dutch scored first in the twenty-fifth minute, but 30 seconds later, only moments after the restart,

Sheila Forshaw ran around the Dutch goal-keeper and the final defender to level the scores. Ten minutes into the second half, the Canadians, who never stopped running, scored at a penalty-corner, the ball deflecting off a defender into the goal. The Dutch then took control of the game, and the outstanding Dutch forward,Marjolein Eysvogel, scored

a hat-trick. Her goals came in the forty-eighth, fiftysixth and sixty-seventh minutes. Final standings were: The Netherlands 1, Canada 2, Australia 3, West Germany 4, England 5, United States 6, New Zealand 7, Scotland 8, Argentina 9, Soviet Union 10, India 11, Wales 12. The top eight teams qualify for the 1986 World Cup together with the 1986 World Cup hosts if they are not among the eight.
