Forest reserves

Sir,-In 1978 the Wildlife Service requested that all the remaining native forest at Horohoro (near Rotorua) be reserved because of its importance as a habitat for native birdlife,' especially kokako and kaka. Soon after that the Forest Service’s scientific committee requested a somewhat smaller reserve of 1659 hectares. Even this modest proposal was unacceptable to the Forest Service which cut the reserve back to 1430 hectares. The Forest Service has just gone back and logged part of Horohoro even though there was no timber commitment and no jobs were at stake. In response to the growing public ' outcry the Forest Service has made a few off-hand comments as to why the larger reserves requested by the scientific committee and by the Wildlife Service were unnecessary. If the foresters are confident their actions are justifiable then why is there no management plan for the forest. There should be a moratorium on logging until a plan is produced.—Yours, etc.,

B. J. SMITH. April 18, 1983.
