Nuclear weapons
Sir,—The Minister of Defence, Mr Thomson, supports military alliance with the United States (“The Press,” April 20), a nation whose administration declares explicitly its willingness to use nuclear weapons first and deliberately, if it has to. Mr Thomson takes this position while holding simultaneously to the belief that no responsible political leader would use nuclear weapons deliberately. The Minister’s line of reasoning is “lightweight” indeed. Further, he seems to overlook the great likelihood of nuclear war begun by human or computer error. For New Zealand to remain in A.N.Z.U.S. is inviting the Soviet Union to include our cities on its list of nuclear targets. Declaration of a nuclear-weapon-free zone is a positive step to getting off that target list.—Yours, etc.,
ROBERT L. LEONARD. April 21, 1983.
