Mohair prices still rising
Mohair prices have continued on their upward path with the third pool sale of the Mohair Producers’ Association. The marketing committee chairman, Mr Richard Macdonald, of Geraldine, said that tenders had been accepted from processors and exporters for 15,000 kg of mohair, the whole of the No.. 3 pool and the balance of the No. 2 pool. The pool had grossed $187,000 and some individual lines had risen 50 per cent in price since the first sale from the second pool, last
year. He said the average price of $12.50 a kilogram covered all types from stained buck fibre to purest kid mohair..
Some yield testing in Australia had to be done before prices for individual categories were released. An increasing amount of the mohair was sold to New Zealand textile mills and the only problem was the difficulty in selling small lines. The association expected > to pay out the proceeds of the sales in late May and was now investigating the use of a computer programme to speed up the process of paying out 1000 individual producers.
