United not short of incentive

By

DAVID LEGGAT

The knowledge that it trails its old rival, Mount Wellington, by a solitary point, should be enough incentive for Christchurch Mogal United to maintain its . current Rothmans Soccer league impetus in Auckland this weekend.

United will meet Papatoetoe today and HanimexNorth Shore on Monday. Neither side will present points to United on a platter — Papatoetoe has made an impressive start to its league career and will be aware it must pick up as many points as it can in the early part of the season, and North Shore is never an easy touch. However, United has had a lean time since 1979, when it finished second, behind the Mount. The Auckland

side has not been out of the top three in the last five years but now United has a side with enough talent to test its old adversary from the north.

United will travel north this morning with the 11 players who comprehensively outplayed McKee Nelson United last Sunday, with Michael Poole and Keith Braithwaite making up the squad.

Braithwaite’s inclusion is a gamble as his injured ankle leaves him less than 100 per cent fit. United’s coach, Mr Terry Conley, admitted he would hot have changed his winning team had Braithwaite been fit for today. But depending on the result against Papatoetoe, Mr Conley might be tempted to include the Liverpool-born mid-fielder on-Monday, even

if short on full fitness. If both United and the Mount continue to hold their places at the top of the points table over the next fortnight, their confrontation in Auckland in the final round before the league break on May 15 should be a game to savour.

The remaining league games today are Dunedin City v. McKee Nelson United, Gisborne City v. Mount Wellington, National Mutual Miramar v. Wellington Diamond United, Napier City Rovers v. Manurewa and Hanimex-North Shore v. Dunedin Technical.

On Monday, Dunedin City will meet W.D.U.,, Gisborne will play Manurewa, Napier will face the Mount, Papatoetoe will meet Dunedin Technical and Miramar will play Nelson.
