New rugby grandstand

A phoenix has arisen from the ashes in Malvern Street, and footballing followers will be overjoyed that they can again sit in comfort while watching matches at Rugby Park. The old stand was destroyed by fire in 1981, but an impressive new structure has been completed, and it will be officially opened by the chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union’s council, Mr C. A. Blazey, on

Monday afternoon. The ceremony will take place just before the main Canterbury trial. The colourful new stand cost in excess of $200,000, is stacked with comfortable bucket seats, and has four self-contained changing rooms — each equipped with showers — and a large social room. A press and broadcasting box is also included.
