Horse farm may be sold

The property, Horsehaven, the subject of a two-day court hearing, is being sold. The proprietors of the Sefton retirement home for unwanted and injured horses, Mr Silas Derrett and his mother Mrs Valerie Derrett, were aquitted in the District Court at Rangiora yesterday on charges laid against them under the Animal Protection Act. Judge Frampton ruled that the state of neglect of horses on the property was not wilful. The Leithfield man who is buying the 18.2 ha property on Factory Road said that the sale had been completed subject to final legal approval. He had paid the deposit about three weeks ago, but did not know when the property had appeared on the market.

The buyer, who’ did not want to be named, said that he intended farming the land.

Mr Derrett declined to comment on the sale last evening. Court report, page 4
