Official report, prices

Medium and strong crossbred wools were in sellers’ favour at the Christchurch wool sale yesterday compared with the Napier sale on Thursday, according to the official report. The report, issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association, in conjunction with the Woolbuyers’ Association and the Wool Board, said the sale for crossbred secondshear was irregular but generally unchanged from Napier. Crossbred lambs’ wool was' quoted as firm, and crossbred skirtings and oddments generally unchanged. The offering of 27,799 . bales was drawn from all Canterbury districts including the Chatham Islands, plus a good supply from Nelson and the West Coast. The figure includes 2547 bales from Wool Board stocks. Some of the fleece lots were unexpectedly good for an April sale, but in the main were of average style. Many lines were cotted.

Lambs’ wool and secondshear made up by far the largest percentage of the offering, and these were of all qualities and lengths. Over all, it was quite an attractive display of these wools. The main buyers were the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and China.

Compared with the Dunedin sale on March 30, the quotations were: fine and medium halfbred, firm; extra strong and strong Halfbred, 2.5 per' cent dearer; Halfbred skirtings and oddments, sellers’ favour. The Wool Board gave limited support to the market by bidding on approximately 1 per cent of the offering and having about 2 per cent sold or passed to it. Prompt date for the sale is May 10. The following official range of prices includes the Wool Board supplement. It is issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ Association: Fine Merino, 64/ 70s and finer:
