Extra Aust. race for Fountaincourt

PA Sydney One of New Zealand’s top stayer, Fountaincourt, will start in the Services Memorial Cup at Randwick on Anzac-Day.. ’ The abrupt change of plans came after his trainer, Cyril Pfefferle, was told that the- Australian Jockey Club was having trouble getting entries for the 2400 m $15,000 event. The A.J.C. was forced to 4 extend the nomination deadline until yesterday, and three more horses, including the New Zealander, were put forward. After Fountaincourt ran third in the Sydney Cup on Saturday, Pfefferle said that the gelding would be returned home for a rest before starting on a spring campaign -which would include the Melbourne Cup,. However, Pfefferle changed his mind after hearing of the small field •for the Memorial Cup, and seeing: his charge’s oondi-' tion. : . • • “Fountaincourt has done well since the Sydney Cup, and as he is not going home for , another, two weeks, he may as' well have another ' race,” Pfefferle said. Spring Moss had also been tipped' for the Memorial Cup, but Brian Smith, the former New Zea-

lander who is looking after the gelding, said that the five-year-old had not yet recovered from his Sydney Cup run. Saturday’s Sydney Cup winner, Veloso, has also had his plans changed and the Zamazaan three-year-old is now expected to line up in the A.J.C. St Leger on Monday. His trainer, Mel Barnes, said on Monday evening that Veloso was doing so well after his Cup triumph that it would be silly not to at least nominate-him for the $40,000 race. The top Australian jockey, Peter Cook, had accepted the ride on the New Zealander, Sir Riverton, in the 2800 m classic, but was released .by the horse’s trainer, Graham Rogerson, . if Veloso starts. Secured Deposit, second to Veloso on Saturday, will also line up in the feature race, along with Vicky Av, which arrives in Sydney with Sir Riverton today. Fountaincourt’s jockey from Saturday, Phillip Smith, will take the reins on Secured Deposit, in the place of the regular rider, Tony Williams, who was suspended after Saturday’s race. ■. ■ i •" Vicky Av will be ridden by t&e veteran New Zealander, John Grylls. j:
