Big Aust, win for Lumber Leon
Lumber Leon, which gained a win and a rather unlucky third at the New Zealand Cup carnival last November, is fast becoming one of the top-ranked two-year-olds in Western Australia. The son of Lumber Dream and Lady Leon recently won the $17,000 Champagne Stakes at Gloucester Park, Perth. He was three and four wide for the last 800 m and came on to win decisively. Another former Canterbury youngster, Morano Magic, was favourite for the
race, but he faded to eighth after forcing much of the pace. Lumber Leon was formerly trained by Colin de Filippi for Mr Peter Cocks, of Christchurch, and Garry Golding and Barry White, two of the trainer’s employees. Soon after those two races he was purchased by the West Melton trainer, Kevin Ryder, for Mr Roy Annear, of Perth, who has enjoyed a remarkable run of success lately with former New Zealand horses.
Fantasy Lass has been a good winner, as has Leibesham Lady (formerly Judy’s Girl), which has won some $60,000 in stakes this season. The latter finished second to Enterprise in the Sires’ Produce Stakes Final at Addington Raceway. Krina Bella (LordshipBellajily) is unbeaten in her last three starts and is considered a top chance in the rich classics to be run in Perth in the next few weeks. All of Mr Annear’s purchases were negotiated by Ryder.
