Tasmania will ‘go on fighting’
NZPA Canberra The Tasmanian Premier, Mr Robin Gray, has said his Government will not give in to the “misuse” of Federal powers invoked by the Prime Minister, Mr Bob Hawke, to stop work on the Gordon-below-Franklin dam in the state’s south-west wilderness. The Federal Government has issued Executive Council regulations effectively< making illegal any further work on the dam which is an area listed by the World Heritage Commission. The regulations, under Section 69 of the 1975 National Parks and Wildlife Conservation Act, have been gazetted and are law, but they are open to challenge in the High Court. Speaking in Hobart, Mr Gray said: “We are going to go on fighting and make sure we provide the electricity Tasmania needs and jobs Tasmanians need, and we will go on fighting for as long as it is necessary to. ensure that everyone understands this is a project that cannot be done without.”
