Win for India
NZPA-Reuter Berbice, Guyana India romped back into the reckoning in the 50overs one-day series when they defeated the West Indies by 27 runs to win the second match in commanding style at the Albion Sports Complex, Berbice. The victory, based on a masterful 90 by the star opener, Sunil Gavaskar, and 72 from the captain, Kapil Dev, who tore the West Indies bowling apart, drew the Indians level 1-1 in the three-match series. The Indians hammered five for 282 off 47 overs to record their first one-day victory over the World Cup champions, who replied with
nine for 255 after struggling back from a disastrous start. Gavaskar had been struggling for form for the entire six weeks of the tour. But his innings included eight boundaries magnificently dispatched round the wicket and he dominated an opening stand of 93 with Ravi Shastri before being run out by Jeff Dujon. The captain, Dev, came in with the score at 152 for two after Shastri and Mohinder Amarnath . had gone for 30 apiece and slammed seven fours and three sixes to the delight of the 16,000 fans who packed the stands.
