School for young rugby players
Sixty of the best young (under 21) rugby players in the country will be at Lincoln College this week-end for the Fresh-up promising players’ school. The school is now in its tenth year and the most marked change in recent times has been that instead of aiming for an even spread of players from all unions the object has been to select the four best players in each position. These are usually players who have come to the fore in the under 16 and under 18 island tournaments. The school will once
again be under the direction of the former All black fullback, Noel Bowden, and his support team includes not only top players and coaches, but also physical education and medical experts. The visiting coaches include Neville Goodwin, Tom Lister, Brian Craies, Peter Goldsmith and Frank Ryan and they will be augmented by such locals as Stan Hill, Alex Wyllie, Laurie O’Reilly, lan Rodger, John Harwood and John Creighton. Efforts have been made to provide a specialist for
every position and it is a tribute to Peter Jellyman’s style and class as a goalkicker that he is seen, as the man best able to help aspiring goal-kickers. The school will follow much the same format as in recent years, with both individual and group sessions. Two games will be played on Sunday afternoon and video tapes of these will give the players the opportunity to see for themselves before they leave for home on Monday just how much they have learnt.
