Award offered for Third World work
An $BO,OOO award for development work in Third World countries is offered by the Belgian-based King Baudouin Foundation.
The foundation is calling for nominees for the 1984 presentation of its third King Baudouin International Development Prize. The prize was set up to reward persons or organisations which made a big contribution to Third World development or co-opera-tion between industrialised and developing countries. Activities encouraging developing peoples to make their own progress are particularly favoured.
The award was first made in 1980 when the joint winners were Professor Paulo Freire, for teaching methods to eliminate illiter-
acy, and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research for its aid in improving world food production levels. In 1982, the award went to Dr A. T. Ariyaratne, the president of the Shramadana Sarvodaya movement in Sri Lanka. Dr Ariyaratne helped to encourage local communities to control their own development. Nominations for the prize should be sent to the foundation’s secretariat on the advice of a selection committee. A number of organisations will be asked to make nominations. Other interested parties can get details from Belgian diplomatic posts or the secretariat. The address is 21 rue Brederode, B-1000, Brussels.
