Akaroa council to extend office
The Akaroa County offices will be extended at a cost of about $lOO,OOO. Akaroa County councillors decided on Friday to go ahead with the renovation and extension of the existing brick building and to raise $120,000, one half of this by loan and the other by selling county assets. The possibility of extending the existing offices or of building a new office had been discussed at previous council meetings. A plan for an extended office was put before the meeting by the county’s building inspector, Mr B. J. Morton.
Mr T. J., Brocherie, the County Chairman, told councillors that a decision should be made at the meeting, otherwise the matter would again be deferred.
The extensions would include removing a double brick wall and three chimneys and this would provide enough bricks to blend the
appearance of the extension with that of the existing building, said Mr Morton.
The main entrance would be shifted to the side of the present building. The general office would be enlarged, and new offices for the county clerk, assistant county clerk, building inspector and engineer would be added. An archives and records room would be added as a mezzanine floor above the general office and the existing engineer’s office would be used as a computer room.
Extending the old building would cost about twothirds of the bill for a new office building, said Mr Brocherie. The council went into committee to discuss means of financing the renovations and extensions: Councillors voted unanimously to raise the money by loan and selling council assets.
