Milestone for Spreydon
Alan Briden and his team of Wallace Reid, Ray Fehsenfeld and Bill McDonald gave their Spreydon club its first centre fours bowls title in its 60 years, when they won the pre-Easter tournament at the Woolston W.M.C. yesterday. In the final, Briden met Eric Tomlinson (Redcjiffs), whose team was Ron Main, Gary Beaumont and Leo Schafer. It was a very onesided match; the Redcliffs four dipping sharply on its fine form of the earlier rounds. Briden scored a five on the first end and by the ninth end he was ahead, 13-1. What little
chance Tomlinson had of making a recovery disappeared when he dropped a six on the fourteenth end, and then a four on the fifteenth. . This shot Briden to a 26-6 lead and Tomlinson conceded on the eighteenth end with the score at 39-10. The game was played in a very difficult wind, but Briden was given a good start by Reid and Fehsenfeld on most of the heads and McDonald played some lovely shots to be the best player on the green. Briden added quite a few extra counters and he also played some good drives.
Tomlinson, under a lot more pressure than his rival, made one or two good saves, but he rarely had enough bowls on the head to turn the game around. The Redcliffs four was seen in a much better light when it beat Travis Coup (Kaiapoi) in the semi-finals. Tomlinson was 9-1 up after six ends and he was untroubled to win 18-7, Coup almost doubling his score with a three on the last end. Briden met another Papanui team, skipped by Syd Glennie and comprising Cliff Johnston, Murray Clements, and Keith Browning, in his semi-final. Briden
was 17-8 ahead before he put himself beyond reach with a six on the seventeenth end. The final score was 23-10.
Ken Watson, who was skipping the team which won the title last year under Morgan Moffat’s direction, was eliminated on Saturday by Harry Scrimgeour (Rangiora). Scrimgeour was narrowly beaten by Glennie in the quarter-finals, and Tomlinson, who collected some top scalps on his way to the final, added another of note in this round when he put paid to Wally Wilkinson’s hopes of completing a Christmas-Easter fours double. Results of post-section play from the second round were: Second round A. Stuart (Burnside) 18, H. Wilkinson (Beckenham) 9; K. Briscoe (Hornby) 18, T. Kennedy (Christchurch-Richmond M.S.A.) 11; A.
