M.P. critical of S.A. visit
PA Wanganui The Labour member of Parliament for Wanganui, Mr C. R. Marshall, has criticised three National backbench members for their visit to South Africa, accusing them of being gullible and giving the South Africans what they wanted. The three, Messrs T. de V. Hunt (Pakuranga), N. P. H. Jones (Invercargill), and R. L. Bell (Gisborne), returned to New Zealand on Friday after three weeks in South Africa.
Mr Marshall said the entire affair was a disgusting and outrageous attempt to whitewash South Africa. The three members’ com-
ments on conditions and current affairs in South Africa were “so much rubbish,” he said.
He suggested Messrs Hunt, Jones, and Bell might find representatives of what he called corrupt countries such as Argentina, Chile, and South Korea on their doorsteps. “They may want them to put their countries in a Better light,” Mr Marshall said.
The trip showed how gullible the three men were, he said.
“Most politicians know when they are taken in — at least I would like to think so,” Mr Marshall said.
