St Andrew’s four ends N.I. run

The St Andrew’s four ended the North Island’s domination of under-19 rowing by winning the Springbok Shield at the national secondary schools’ championships in Hamilton on Saturday. The four of John Tiso (stroke), Andrew Taylor, Graham Black, Garry Blay and Andrew Bird (cox) shook off the challenge of Tauranga Boys’ College and Hamilton Boys’ High School for a welldeserved win in the final, on Lake Karapiro. The crew has been together for three years, the only change in that time being the cox. Saturday’s win, by three and a half lengths, follows the crew’s win in the national under-17 championship last year. Rowing in the Avon club’s colours, they won the national junior fours title earlier this month. St Andrews also won the under-19 coxed pairs title.

Westlake Boys’ High School won the prestigious Maadi Cup eights final in an exciting finish from Hamilton Boys’ High School. It was Westlake’s second Cup win since the event began in 1947, and ended a five-year winning run by Tauranga Boys’ College.
