Nuclear weapons
Sir,—ln the item, “Rescue Network” (“The Press,” March 23) concerning assistance by satellite to rescue operations, the Canadian Defence Minister is quoted as praising the four countries, U.S.S.R., U.S., Canada and France for their spirit of international cooperation; “proof that when life is at stake, we can work together.” What hypocrisy. Those countries, along with others, waste vast amounts of the Earth’s resources preparing for the war which threatens the lives of thousands of millions of people.— Yours, etc., JIM McCAHON. March 23, 1983.
Sir,—On Sunday, March 20, I and thousands of men, women and children attended the Christchurch nuclear weapon free zone peace festival in North Hagley Park. I observed that the Values Party, Social Credit Party■ and Labour Party were present officially at this splendid festival for peace, but no National Party. — Yours, etc., GAVIN CUMMING. March 23, 1983.
