Brothers were friendly rivals

From J. J. BOYLE Nelson Brothers were friendly rivals in a cliff hanging situation after the Swan Hotel Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. treble at Nelson yesterday. Mr Harry Spicer, of Christchurch, the partowner of Whirl, was offering congratulations to his Nelson-based brother Les, the part-owner of Sutch, as the horses returned to the Birdcage after a spectacular two-sided finish. On his visual call, the judge Mr L. Wilde, named

Sutch first and Whirl second. However, the photo finish camera put the matter straight. Whirl had got there by a nose. Whirl was something of a disappointment when fifth on ■ the first day of the meeting, but that run followed a string of seconds. Sutch was favourite after his first-day win, for the Riccarton stable of Tom Lalor. Sutch was trained for his early racing by John Healey, who now prepares Whirl from his Richmond stable.
